Change Alumni - Alphaxrd

Alumni Blog: Meet Alphaxrd from kenya

Alphaxrd Gitau Ndungu is a former CFC participant (2011/2012) and Young Farmer in Kenya currently a master’s student at the University of Nairobi studying Research and Public Policy with a focus on Agricultural Policy. He holds a bachelor  in Economics with a Major in Agriculture Economics.

What has been the most significant change in your life after participating in the Communication for Change program?

- The communication for Change experience gave me a new perspective of global issues and acknowledged myself as a change agent. Since then, I have been engaged in various programs geared towards fighting for global justice and addressing challenges faced by the community and specifically in the climate change and Agriculture space. The projects that I have been involved in so far include the Future Leaders Connect by the British Council and  the Youth Inclusiveness Agriculture Kenya.

How are these experiences relevant to the work that you are doing today?

- As I am passionate about Food Security and climate change, CFC helped me to situate my climate action efforts from a global view point. I managed to build my expertise around building Partnerships that enable stakeholders to collaborate and address challenges in the two critical areas that support each other, agriculture and climate change. With different development organizations such as HIVOS/ AgriProFocus, ICCO Cooperation, International Fertilizer Development Centre/2SCALE amongst others continue working with farmers to address issues such as policy gaps, input supply and market access through better organizing themselves into groups that increase their bargaining power.

What is your goal moving forward?

Africa continues to face numerous effects from climate change that critically affects their food security. Therefore, I choose to combine my efforts towards addressing systemic change on climate change and food security at large. My dream is to see a country and continent  where farmers who are the most affected by climate change are well supported through channeling the right investments into farmer organized groups that have not been well supported over the years such as cooperatives and other formal or informal farmer groups.
